Simon's Saturday helps raise awareness for marrow donors

An 8 year old battling leukemia inspired a community Saturday. Hundreds of folks came out to St. Ann's School in Emmaus to take part in 'Simon's Saturday.'

The point of the event was to get people out and registered for the National Bone Marrow Registry. After fighting cancer for five years, 8 year old Simon was able to find a donor, but not everyone is as lucky as this little boy.

Every four minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Simon Ernst was one of them.

"He was diagnosed with leukemia five years ago and he relapsed twice, and his doctors have now decided that the only thing, that another way to cure it is to give him a bone marrow transplant," explained Kelly Sisonick who organized the event.

A transplant replaces the unhealthy marrow with healthy blood-forming cells. Because there aren't enough registered donors, 6 out of 10 patients never receive the lifesaving transplant they need.

"There's just so many people out there that don't have matches, and people are passing away," said Sisonick.

Thankfully, in Simon's case, his 10 year old sister Sydni was a match. Just over a week ago the second grader had his transplant. Saturday the community came out to celebrate Simon, and try to be a match for someone who needs it.

Getting added to the 'Be The Match' registry is a quick and easy process. It takes about ten minutes to fill out paperwork, and then you simply swab the inside of your cheeks. Once you're on the list you'll be contacted if your marrow can help.

"Very touched and very thankful," said Simon's father Jon. "And it's amazing to see the people get behind this cause and want to do something for not only Simon but for kids with cancer and to help save a kid's life."

If you weren't able to make it out today a home swab kit can be sent right to you so you can join the bone marrow registry. Click here for more information.

One Tank Trip: Martin's Potato Chips

The next time you take a bite out of a chip, you might be munching down on the same brand as the president.

The proof is in the pictures. Bags of Martin's Potato Chips are aboard Air Force One. It's a fun fact you'll learn from Barry Fultz, our tour guide for the free factory tour at Martin's Potato Chip Company in Thomasville, York Co.

While you look around, Fultz explains how the original owners, farmers Harry and Fairy Martin, got into the chip business in 1941.

"Mrs. Martin, being a frugal lady, says, 'Harry [her son], you don't have to buy potato chips. I'll make you potato chips,'" said Fultz.

She ended up selling those, along with their produce, at the markets.

When they retired in 1971, the Martins sold the business to the Potters.

Butch Potter was about 10-years-old, and the doors to the factory have been open here ever since.

"Just like you let your neighbors into your house, you know, you let people into your factory," said Potter.

Tours are great because it's the only place you can pick up insider tips.

Here's a chip secret for you: If you want to freshen up an open bag, just pop a few potato chips in the microwave, and seconds later, it's like it's hot off the assembly line.

Did we mention the free samples?

It makes wearing the tour's required hairnet worth it.

Martin's produces a little more than 10 million pounds of chips a year, and what would go to waste is recycled.

And if you're wondering how the chips ended up being rather presidential, you can thank former President Bill Clinton. He apparently snuck some chips into his limo on a visit here. Who can blame him?

A state senator from our region said he's been diagnosed with cancer.

Mike Folmer, a Republican who represents parts of Berks and Lebanon counties, announced Wednesday that he has a highly treatable form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

"My specific type is follicular grade I, the most common type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and highly treatable," Folmer said. "I join more than a half of million other Americans living with the disease, and look forward to joining the many others who have been successfully treated, including Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, hockey great Mario Lemieux, and former United States Senator Arlen Specter."

Folmer said he plans to keep up with Senate business as normal while undergoing treatment.

"Those who know me best are aware of my strong faith and the importance of family, and as my doctors chart a course of treatment, I will rely on my faith and support of family and friends," said Folmer, who added that he plans to update his constituents about his condition through various forms of media and his weekly e-newsletter, Mike’s Memo.”

According to the Lymphoma Research Foundation, treatment will likely involve some form of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, biologic therapy, or some combination of the three.

STANDD program taking flight

A group in connection with St. Luke's Hospital is taking a stand against distracted driving.

The goal is getting all drivers to pay attention behind the wheel.

Drivers multi-tasking behind the wheel, on the phone, grabbing a quick bite to eat and talking to other people in the car. They may seem like good ideas at the time, but they are ideas that could be deadly.

"Well I have three daughters that are approaching the age of driving and I see a lot of different accidents that have occurred in our area," said Jane Hoff the creator of Take a STANDD.

That is stand with two D's

"It stands for stop texting and distracted driving," said Hoff.

Hoff worked with trauma center doctors at St. Luke's hospital to design a curriculum they'll be sharing with schools and community groups around the valley.

"One case is one case too many and we are seeing an increase in accidents that are related to distracted driving," said Jennifer Grell, the trauma program manager at St. Luke's Hospital.

Creators of the program say it's not just texting on the phone that's a distraction - things like having a drink, or eating chips could cause a problem. So could controlling the radio.

"Think about the consequences. No message is that important," said Amanda Illingworth who was involved in a distracted driving accident.

Illingworth is happy the take a stand organization has started. Just last year she was a involved in a distracted driving accident that nearly took her life.

"I knew that stuff like this could happen, but I never knew it would happen to me and that's what they think," she said.

"We want to be able to go out there and have people hear the message and hopefully change their behaviors about their texting or their distractions while driving," said Lohrman.

The first presentation will be at Saucon Valley High School.

Illingworth and others involved in distracted driving accidents will participate in future "Take a STANDD" presentations.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and for Christians it's the beginning of Lent.

People received their ashes at the Cathedral of Saint Catharine of Siena in Allentown.

Catholics get a cross made of ashes on their foreheads to remind them that Lent is a time of baptismal renewal.

Of course, it all leads up to Easter, at the end of Lent.

A Hall of Fame football player won't be running for a U.S. House seat in New Jersey after all.

Former New York Giant Linebacker Harry Carson says he won't run against Republican Congressman Scott Garrett.

Garrett serves northern Warren County, and much of northern New Jersey.

Carson says he doesn't think he has the passion needed to run for public office.

The long-time New York Giant was asked by Democrats to consider a run.

Carson played football from 1976-1988, every year for the Giants.

Stretch of highway scene of at least 7 accidents in past week

A stretch of busy highway has turned into an accident zone.

In one week's time, at least seven crashes happened along a one-mile stretch of Route in Amity Twp., Berks Co., said police. Now, both law enforcement and local businesses want drivers to slow down.

"Between Friday morning and Saturday morning, we towed in 12 cars, all totaled," said Brian Harner, manager of Harner's Auto Body.

All of them totaled, and now sitting in Harner's lot.

A Nissan flipped over and burst into flames near Monocacy Creek Road on Friday evening. Earlier that same day, a three-vehicle wreck shut down 422 West, near Limekiln Road, for about an hour. On Tuesday, it was a similar story -- another three-vehicle collision on 422.

"We get runs like this, but this seems to be a little worse than usual," said Harner. "It used to be when it was bad weather we'd get the bad wrecks, now it seems to be when it's nice out."

Police have called the accidents driver error, caused by people being impatient.

"People are trying to beat the light and are not paying attention," said Patty Vanneman, who owns Island Pizza off 422. She saw many of the accidents happen and wants drivers to hit the breaks before someone loses their life.

"Slow down and pay attention to the red lights, when it turns yellow stop you know, don't try to rush it. There's a lot of young kids on the roads learning to drive, it's scary," said Vanneman.

The speed limit changes from 45 to 55 mph along the stretch of 422 in Amity Township. If drivers paid more attention, police said it would help prevent another car from ending up in Harner's lot.

Aggravated indecent assault charges against Christopher Hickler and Cassandra Smith were held for court during their preliminary hearings Wednesday.

Police say a 13-year-old girl lived with the couple last summer in Coolbaugh Township.

Attempted child luring outside school puts parents on edge

Parents are on high alert after police said a man tired to lure a young girl after school.

"Terrifying actually for any parent," said father Marvin Desedas.

The attempted luring happened Tuesday afternoon outside Washington Elementary School in Allentown. The man might have succeeded had it not been for a bright 10-year-old girl.

"He tried to get him to go with her with a routine that might be used to lure a child," said Capt. Dean Schwartz, Allentown Police Dept.

As school was letting out, police said a man, described as being white and between the ages of 30 and 40, wearing black and white sneakers, black jeans, a black jacket and a black cowboy hat, approached the girl and told her that her mom asked him to pick her up.

The girl ran back inside the school, police said.

"I tell her any stranger you alert someone next to you, a teacher, anyone who is out here," said Vincent Cotto, a father of three children, about his 6-year-old daughter, who attends Washington.

That's the same message the Allentown School District sent to parents via a letter informing them of the situation.

"Also give a list at the bottom of the letter informing them of what to think about," said Russ Mayo, the district's superintendent.

Have a code word, police said, that kids can recognize if they don't know the person picking them up.

"What parents should do is take this as an example," Cotto warned. "If haven't been talking to kids, take heed to this because it could happen to anybody."

Unlike other areas of Allentown, the section of the city around the school does not have security cameras because it is not considered a high crime area.

City formally unveils plans for 'restaurant month'

Allentown is taking restaurant week to a whole new level.

City officials on Wednesday unveiled more details on the upcoming restaurant month. It will start on March 1 and run through the month.

Thirty restaurants are participating, including Pistachio's, Bay Leaf and Louie's. The eateries will offer special pricing, unique dishes and live entertainment throughout the month.

Diners can also win prizes, and the month-long celebration will extend beyond just restaurants, organizers said.

"Our destinations, our museums, our cultural institutions are also offering specials, so it's not just about dining in the city, but also exploring what else we have to offer here in Allentown," said Tara Craig, Allentown special events manager.

The city has also taken the wraps off the new restaurant month website.

Firefighters battled smoke and flames at a house in Reading Wednesday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 2:10 p.m. in the 100 block of Mulberry Street. It took crews about a half-hour to get the fire under control.

We're told the fire may have also damaged a neighboring home.

No one was hurt.

Investigators have not determined what sparked the fire.

A crumpled pile of wreckage is all that remains of a tractor trailer that went off a highway early Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 5 a.m. on Route 422 West in Amity Twp., Berks Co.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Leonard Barnard, lost control of the rig, police said. The truck, hauling produce, turned onto its side, slid through the guardrail and rolled a number of times down a 30 foot embankment.

Barnard, 45, of Philadelphia, was trapped inside the cab for about 35 minutes before he could be freed by firefighters and flown to Reading Hospital, said police. Barnard is listed in serious condition, according to a hospital spokesperson.

One lane of Route 422 West, between the Stowe exit in Montgomery County and River Bridge Road in Berks County, was closed for several hours while crews worked to remove the wrecked rig and its load or produce, police said.

Westbound drivers experienced significant delays in getting by the scene during the morning rush hour.

Police and firefighters were assisted by numerous other agencies, including PennDOT and the Pennsylvania Departments of Agriculture and Environmental Protection.

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to call the Amity Township Police Dept. at 610-689-6000.

The possibility of a gun inside a school prompted the early dismissal of students Wednesday afternoon.

The dismissal came about after a message was found in a female restroom at Tulpehocken Area Junior-Senior High School in Jefferson Twp., Berks Co., around 10:15 a.m., said state police, who noted that the message indicated a gun may be located in a student's locker.

The school was immediately placed on lock down while state police responded and searched the building, said Edward Albert, the district's superintendent. As a further precaution, Albert said the district decided to dismiss students at 1:30 p.m.

The search of the school turned up nothing, police said.

Approximately 800 students in grades seven through 12 attend Tulpehocken, according to the school's website.

Truckers seeing red with rising gas prices

Rising diesel prices are forcing some truck drivers to hit the brakes.

Filling up their big rigs these days comes at a big cost. According to AAA, Pennsylvania's average for diesel fuel is $4.15 a gallon.

"They're killing us. It's too expensive," said Leo Bonilla, a truck driver from Easton. "We don't have enough to pay for it."

"You need to pick the money where it needs to go or you won't be here," said Gene Mullen, a truck driver from McAdoo, Schuylkill Co.

Bonilla and Mullen are owners of truck moving companies who said that many once privately owned truck companies are now being bought by bigger companies because it is too expensive to foot the bill for fuel.

"That's why everyone is going out of business," said Mullen, who noted that a truck that holds about 200 gallons of fuel costs truckers more than $700 to fill.

Both men said they calculate a fuel surcharge each month, but gas prices are rising so fast it's hard to keep up.

"We'll probably have to stop those trucks all together because we can't afford it anymore," said Bonilla.

The national average of diesel is currently $3.95 a gallon. That's up 39 cents since last year. That might not seem like a lot of money to some, but for truck drivers, those prices can make or break their business.

"When I fill up, it's about $800. It lasts me about three days, four days. It's been about over a thousand dollars a week," said Bonilla.

"You just got to make sure you get enough money per mile to run the truck or you're wasting your time," said Mullen.

During the height of the recession, Mullen said he remembers diesel fuel being more than $5.00 a gallon, something he hopes to never see again.

WENDY DAVIS: A new study says Pennsylvania is a dangerous place for older drivers.

ROB VAUGHN: Researchers found the Keystone State is the fourth deadliest state for seniors behind the wheel. WFMZ's John Craven is here. John.. Why are the numbers so high?

Pennsylvania DOES have more seniors than most states. But even when you take that into account.. This study found seniors are involved in a disproportionate number of deadly accidents here.

Pennsylvania is a dangerous place for older drivers, according to a study released Wednesday.

The TRIP Research Group found the Keystone State is the fourth deadliest for seniors behind the wheel.

At 67-years-old, Bonnie Hausman of Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., is not about to close the door on getting behind the wheel.

"I really need the car," she said.

Hausman drives herself and a friend to doctors' appointments and other vital functions. She considers herself a safe driver, but deadly accidents involving seniors are all too common.

According to the TRIP study, 20% of all Pennsylvania crashes involve drivers over 65. Many involve seniors misjudging left turns, according to AAA.

"As we age our vision decreases," said Theresa Podguski with AAA's East Penn chapter. "Mature drivers should be allowing more distance between their vehicle and the vehicle in front of them."

Doctors and family members can already anonymously report hazardous drivers to PennDOT. Plus, each month, the state chooses almost 2,000 motorists over the age of 45, at random, for re-testing.

"It is hard for people to give up the keys because they lose their independence," said Podguski.

But bigger solutions are needed, according to a 2010 PennDOT study. It said the state needs to better identify problem intersections and improve signage. It also said we need a better database of elderly motorists, with up-to-date driving records and medical information.

Communities also need to offer more alterantives to driving. According to the study, public transportation is too inconvenient for many seniors.

"For me to stand out and wait for a bus or a cab and everything, it's not for me," said Hausman.

One thing the PennDOT study does not recommend is mandatory re-testing for all elderly drivers, as some have suggested.

"I don't think it should be required for everyone that age," said Loretta Seidick, 72. "I think it's their ability to focus on driving."

The challenge for PennDOT is figuring out exactly who is a potential risk and needs to be re-tested. Right now, it's largely up to doctors, families, or elderly drivers themselves -- who often are reluctant to hand over the keys.

The Garden State fares better, by the way. It ranks 19th in deadly accidents involving senior drivers.

Two brothers were killed in a fire that broke out inside their home overnight, officials said.

The fire broke out a little before 3 a.m. Wednesday at 1920 Walbert Avenue, near the former Charlie Brown's Steakhouse, in South Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co. The fire went to three alarms before firefighters could get it under control.

Two people, Russell Hutchison, 43, and Michael Hutchison, 48, were found inside the burning home and rushed to Lehigh Valley Hospital, but both men died of smoke inhalation a short time later, said Scott Grim, the Lehigh County coroner.

The coroner is looking for the Hutchisons' next of kin. Anyone with family information should contact the Lehigh County coroner's office at 610-782-3426.

A dog also died in the fire, officials said.

A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal is assisting the South Whitehall Township police and fire departments with their investigation of the fire, which does not appear to be suspicious, Grim said.

The Bucks started fast, leading by 8 at the half and then extending that lead in the 2nd half to move into the quarterfinal round of the District 1 AAAA playoffs. Derek Dyer led the Bucks with 14 points.
