The holidays are often a time we think of others and how we can help. The Greater Berks Food Bank, at 1011 Tuckerton Court in Muhlenberg Twp., Berks Co., is always in need of extra hands.

One of the programs it has is called Produce 4 Kids. Volunteers get to bag healthy snacks for Reading school children.

"Everybody needs to eat and this is program that will send home fresh produce that they have a hard time affording," said Ashley Snyder, agency and volunteer services coordinator.

Now that the bags are packed, all 650 of them will be distributed to elementary students at a school in Reading.

"I have a soft spot in my heart for helping out any child. And this is a really hands on program. We get to see the children and hand the food directly to the children. I feel like it is a good program to open up your eyes," said Snyder.

Produce 4 Kids is just one of the many programs the Greater Berks Food Bank has that allows it to reach 60,000 people a year.

"We are a staff of 15. We could never do it without the help of volunteers. It is a really good experience knowing you are helping your neighbors and we welcome people to come and help us out," said Doug Long, the food bank's marketing and development manager.

Although the holidays remind us to help others, staff at the food bank want you to remember they need help year round.

"Our need for volunteers here, just like a lot of other organizations, is a year round need. We need help here in March, in June and in September," said Long.

You must be 12 years or older to volunteer and accompanied by an adult if you are under 16.
