Child struck by pickup truck in south Reading; hit-and-run driver sought
Tears and rage filled the streets of Reading Thursday night. A pickup truck struck a 3-year-old girl and the driver left her to die, police said. Her family now has to cope with an unthinkable tragedy.
The accident happened just before 7 p.m. near South 10th and Cotton streets in Reading.
Police believe a full sized Dodge Ram pick-up truck slammed into the girl, identified as Ja-Lexy Bobet, and shockingly kept on going.
"I heard it, you know what I mean," explained witness Michael Roman. "I had head phones on and I heard it. I heard a boom sound."
The truck was caught on surveillance cameras, and is described as red or burnt-orange in color.
"He just ran her over and kept going, didn't even stop. Guy's there yelling mad loud talking about 'yo stop stop stop.' He just kept going," said Roman.
He said the driver looked back and never slowed down after hitting the little girl.
"That's when I panicked. I was like, 'Oh my God,' and I had to call the cops. I had to," said Roman.
Investigators told 69 News the driver ran a stop sign just as the child ran out into the street.
The girl was rushed to the trauma center at Reading Hospital, where she later died.
Police said the male driver fled the scene toward Mount Penn, and is still on the run, leaving a family left to pick up the pieces.
"They said she was on her way to the store with my 12 year old nephew and a car just hit her," said the victim's aunt, Clarabel Roman.
She said the family now wants swift justice.
"He needs to pay for what he did," she said.
