Allentown food bank fearful it may have to close

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Adrienne Maio's mission, as director of the Mosser Village Family Center in Allentown, is to feed as many families as come through the doors.

"We've had already 103 families come here this month," Maio said.

But this year, Maio fears that soon the shelves will be empty.

"Our concern is if we're not here there is no one to give them food," Maio said.

Maio has been with the center since its inception back in 1999.

She says the food bank helps low income families fill holes in their pantries that they can't afford to fill at the grocery store.

"It is hard when someone comes and asks you for something and you don't have it to give them," Maio said. "That kind of breaks your heart."

The center has successfully operated for nearly 20 years thanks to funds from the city as well as private donations.
With some of the funding sources recently drying up, Maio now says the doors could close as early as October.

While she crunches the numbers, her mind is on the residents she sees on a daily and monthly basis.

"My concern would be, what would they need to do now to get the food?" Maio said.

Ideally, the center is looking for a corporate partner to help lessen the burden.
