N.J. Police Sergeant Indicted for Misconduct, Filing False Report

A Warren County police sergeant is accused of misconduct, filing a false police report, and lying three times while under oath. Frank Pagano of Phillipsburg was charged today in an eight-count state grand jury indictment. The charges stem from a January 9, 2007 incident in which Pagano stopped a motorist on Route 22 West. Pagano arrested the man after discovering an outstanding warrant, and searched his car...where he found a loaded handgun. The indictment against Pagano alleges that he made false statements in his police report in order to justify his search of the vehicle. Prosecutors dropped the gun charge against the motorist after viewing a video tape from Pagano's patrol car camera. Police say the video was inconsistent with Pagano's report. If convicted, Pagano could be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison.
