When it comes to convenience stores in Pennsylvania, Sheetz is a statewide favorite, according to a survey by Harper Polling.
A regional breakdown of the state, however, tells a different story. While Sheetz's popularity is strongest in central and western Pennsylvania, Wawa is heavily favored in southeastern Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. Turkey Hill is the preferred convenience store in the Scranton area.
"Convenience stores are a part of the cultural fabric of this state," said Brock McCleary, founder of Harper Polling. "As a son of Pennsylvania, I can associate a convenience store with nearly every stage of life to date: Sheetz – childhood, Turkey Hill – college, Wawa – Philly, 7-Eleven – DC, Rutter’s – present day."
While Sheetz and Wawa both offer competitive fuel pricing, self-service beverage stations and made-to-order food -- Sheetz has its "Shwings," "Schack Wrapz" and "Shmuffins;" Wawa has its hoagies and "hot-to-go bowls" -- the poll didn't offer specifics as to why voters chose one store over the other.
The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.47 percent.
