LVIA unveils latest phase of main terminal renovation

HANOVER TWP., Pa. - Lehigh Valley International Airport has a new look that officials hope will draw in some new carriers.

Friday, LVIA dedicated its $7.2 million terminal renovation.

This is phase two of a three phase renovation project.

Airport officials say the changes make LVIA more attractive to air carriers, more competitive with other airports and more appealing to travelers.

If you haven't been to Lehigh Valley International Airport for a while, you're in for a surprise.

Just ask Christopher Carlton who graduated from Lehigh University in 2008, moved to Houston and hasn't seen it since.

"It compares to almost any other airport that you would see now," said Carlton.

Everything from the passenger ticketing area to the the elevators and escalators were re-done.

Baggage screening was moved out of passengers paths and a common use approach was built in to the terminal design.

"It's really very friendly to the airlines because as they need new facilities or need to upgrade their facilities things can be done instantaneously," said LNAA Secretary and Treasurer Michael Dowd.

"I believe that John Henry Ley and Wiley Post, some of the founders of this airport, would be very pleased with the progress that we have seen here," said Congressman Charlie Dent.

LNAA officials say that progress is more thanĀ aestheticĀ and that along with possibly attracting new carriers it will likely boost existing service.

"We are certainly working with out existing carriers, making sure that they understand that we are here to meet their needs and we are talking to a lot of carriers trying to increase service," said LNAA Executive Director Charles Everett.

Everett says the LNAA is gearing up to make plans for phase three which could include a customs area for international travel.

He says those plans should be firmed up sometime in 2013.
