New jobs center to open doors in Allentown on Tuesday

Labor Day of course is about celebrating the worker.

Now the city of Allentown is opening a new job center right in the heart of downtown.

Workers running the center call this a unique opportunity for people looking for a job.

All available positions will be located in the Neighborhood Improvement Zone.

The Neighborhood Improvement Zone was created to spur downtown development in Allentown.

As workers build the new hockey arena and hotel, employers need to find people to fill job vacancies.

"I've been working with Mayor Pawlowski and he certainly is someone that is true to his word and he wanted to open an employment and training center right in the middle of everything that was happening," added Nancy Dischinat, executive director at Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board, Inc.

The city teamed up with Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board, Inc. to make it happen.

And Lehigh Carbon Community College will help get workers proper training.

"The hospitality field, customer service fields," added Terri Keefe, executive director of Workforce and Community Education at Lehigh Carbon Community College. "We already do a lot of computer skill development, but I would see those as the primary areas."

"There's over four thousand jobs coming with the arena and part of the NIZ development that is happening there," said Allentown mayor, Ed Pawlowski.

The jobs available will be located in the NIZ, The only problem now, figuring out what jobs will be available.

"We do not have all the information about all the jobs and all that is going on," said Dischinat "But this employment training center is going to be growing week by week as we become more familiar with the employers that are coming to the downtown area."

LCCC says once a new company announces they are moving into the NIZ, they will develop training programs to get workers prepared for those jobs.
