Corn Stoves Alternative Heating
Story posted on  2006-10-11 19:01:00

It's good popped, creamed, and even on the cob, but believe it or not, some people prefer their corn burned.

It's something you might be seeing more of as temperatures take a dive this winter.

WFMZ's Brittany Westbrook has more on an alternative to heating your home.

5:59 that is all clean, grated, screened, run over a magnet and is dust free

6:16 the cleaner the corn the better it burns

Reporter: And John Mills says the better it will heat your home.

1:50 this a 30,000 unit does approximately 1200 square feet

Reporter: It's a corn burning stove one of several models, Mills sells at his business, Earth in Hand in Easton.

The stoves range in cost from about 2000 with installation for smaller models to more than 3000 for larger models, but Mills says the pay off can be big

4:39 it will take most of the heating bill off
Reporter:

Mills says the average home would use 200 35 pound buckets a winter at 3.50 cents a bucket. Do the math, that's just 700 dollars , a mere fraction of what some people pay to stay warm in the winter.

Then there's the environmental pay off.

John Mills:

5:24 corn has no carbon monoxide, soot...different fuel than wood

Reporter: A renewable energy source that's not new, but that is gaining more recognition.

Dork Sahagian:
26:43 it's very attractive because it's completely renewable, we should we should include in the cost of that it will enhance soil erosion, land use, water use
Reporter: Something environmental experts like Dork Sahagian says we should all consider.

Still he says there is something to be said for exercising environmental responsibility, especially as we enter the colder months.

7:01it seems like when the fuel price drops a litle bit we all forget about it and it comes back to haunt us so we have to look for other alternatives

Reporter: In Easton, Brittany Westbrook, 69 NEWS.
