Proof Positive: Meals on Wheels

What do you do when you can't get out to grocery shop and you can't eat out?

Like thousands of people across the Lehigh Valley, you rely on Meals on Wheels.

WFMZ's Jaccii Farris hits the road as part of our Proof Positive volunteer series.

Every single day 620 meals are prepared and delivered across Northampton County by a family of volunteers at Meals on Wheels.

A family executive director Joann Nenow hopes you will join.

"We need volunteers to grocery shop and we also need volunteers to deliver meals," said Nenow.

You can also work as a meal runner, which was the task I was assigned when I volunteered.

Volunteer Trainer Dale Sourbeck shows me the ropes.

Sourbeck says routes can have a handful of stops or more than a dozen.

Most deliveries go to seniors who are unable to get out of the house.

"Sometimes we are the only people they see, because they have no families," said Sourbeck. "I have been driving for about three years and I have found three people on the floor. Two had laid there the whole weekend."

After several stops, I get the hang of it.

Last on our route Is Rosemarie Carpency.

"I like the meals, I like the people, the volunteers. Every one of them is so nice," said Carpency.

Carpency says the Meals on Wheels delivery is the best part of her day, when she can see a friendly face and talk baseball.

"Shane Victorino. Oh I like that guy," said Carpency.

Joining the Meals on Wheels volunteer family is easy.

All you have to do is be 18 or older, have a clean driving record and a smile to share.

"If you want to volunteer for us an hour and a half a month. An hour and a half every three months, once a week, twice a week we can work around that schedule," said Nenow.
