ALLENTOWN, Pa. - If you're looking for a volunteering opportunity, we have an idea that just might be the 'perfect fit.'
It's a place in Allentown that helps low income women get back into the workforce.
"So we're looking for blue, right?" asked volunteer Rachel Knox, as she helped Lucinda Benson look through racks of clothes at "The Perfect Fit for Working Women" in Allentown.
It's a program of the YMCA/YWCA that gives unemployed, low income women clothes to wear to job interviews, then provides a week's worth of clothes once they land a job.
"You can't go to an interview in jeans or sweats. You're not going to get the job," said Heidi Lennick, Program Director for the Perfect Fit. However, it goes beyond just that.
"When somebody puts the right clothing on we see their personalities change. We see them stand straighter and taller and we see that smile come onto their face," Lennick explained.
That's exactly why Knox volunteers. "I like helping people move forward with their lives, being able to empower them and help them make some decisions and take control," said Knox.
"Ahh that looks so good! Looks fabulous!" exclaimed Knox, as Benson tried on a navy blue blazer over a beautiful magenta top.
After landing a job at a nursing home, the Perfect Fit provided Benson with a week's worth of clothes; in her case, scrubs.
"You start feeling down when you're not working and everything, so getting called back for an interview and being able to pick out some beautiful clothing really helps boost your self-image, your self-esteem," said Benson.
"It is a way to help the community, really help people. You see immediate effects of people coming in, feeling overwhelmed, and walking out excited," Knox said.
The Perfect Fit is looking for volunteers who can help dress up clients and sort clothes.
They also need clothing donations, and people to help with grant writing, marketing, events, and more.
"It really has helped me. I was in a bind and it really came through for me," said Benson.
