"Wicked" has long been a Broadway favorite, but the musical re-imagining of 'The Wizard of Oz" is breaking records as it enters its 10th year anniversary.

According to a press release, the musical just set a new Broadway record for the highest one-week gross, pulling in $2,947,172 at the box office last week. In the same week, the smash hit earned a national touring record by drawing $2,755,070 in ticket sales in St. Louis. The Broadway production and two additional shows in St. Louis and Honolulu garnered a total of $7,297,645 in North America in one week.

Globally the show has garnered nearly $2.9 billion in ticket sales (there are currently seven productions around the world) over it's nine-year run and been seen by 36 million people worldwide. It's remained the number one show on Broadway for its entire run and been honored with 35 major awards, including a Grammy Award and three Tony Awards.

Based on a novel by Gregory Maguire, "Wicked" is the musical adaptation of the untold story of the witches of Oz. The play follows the young Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda in the Land of Oz...long before Dorothy drops in.
