January is the busiest month of the year at many gyms. While a big focus is usually to lose weight, there is a big difference between that and being at a healthy weight.
January is National Healthy Weight Awareness Month, and we're taking a closer look to help you be always aware.
The weather may be chilly, but that is no reason to slow down.
Hitting the gym could jump start your efforts to reach a healthy weight. The key is just to get started.
"It starts with exercise," explained Dominic Cino, senior director at Lehigh Valley Racquet and 24/7 Fitness Clubs. "We recommend two to three days to start off, second, meal planning, proper nutrition is super important."
Fitness professionals can help you figure out your healthy weight range. Cino says just take small steps, make realistic goals and be consistent.
"It's not a hobby, it's a habit," he shared. "So if we start making these things habits, and habitual behavior you're going to stick with it."
Walter Oquendo knows first-hand how important it is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and healthy weight.
"To know that you could end your life early just because you're not eating right, it really scares me," he added. "I'm not sure about other people, but that's something I really take into effect when I consider dieting and working out."
Excess weight is bad for our bodies.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 69% of American adults are overweight, and as of 2012, nearly 78 million are obese.
Health experts say it's an epidemic. The World Health Organization says obesity contributes to an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke.
Fitness clubs offer a wide range of memberships, and could be a good place for you to start toward maintaining a healthy weight.
"We do a free two-week trial. Try it out, make sure it's going to work for you," said Cino.
