Excitement, disappointment as Freddy noms announced

Ready for Freddy? A lot of local high school thespians certainly seem to be.

They held their breath and crossed their fingers, as the 2014 Freddy Nominations were finally revealed. The Freddy awards honor the best in High School Musical Theater.

Thursday drama students packed local high school auditoriums and libraries alike.

"Kind of nervous cause you don't now really what to expect," William Allen High's Yasmin Pierce said.

As the nominees were named some at Liberty High looked for divine intervention to deliver the coveted honor. Prayers seem to have been answered as Drew Donaher nabbed a Freddy nomination for best performance by an actor in a leading role. For his role as Fagin, in Liberty's Oliver.

"My heart was in my throat but at the same time I knew whatever the outcome, everyone who was nominated is very deserving of that nomination," Donaher said.

Now in their 12th year the Freddy's have become something of a regional phenomenon.

The Tony award style show even caught the attention of Hollywood. California film makers made a documentary on the Freddy's a few years ago.

The best in terms of nominations goes to Emmaus High School setting a new Freddy's record with 19 nominations for their production of Beauty and the Beast.

Freedom High School's "Crazy for You" and Parklands "The Wizard of Oz," each nabbed 14 nominations.

Dieruff's "Chicago" reeled in 12 nods and Bangor's "Seusical" had 11.

Notre Dame led smaller schools with 10 nominations.

However not everyone was satisfied.

William Allen High School received only one nod for its Wizard of Oz.

"Shocked. I'm going to be honest, I'm being honest people. I don't know what more we can do to be recognized," William Allen's Theater Director John Sechler said after the nominations.

You can see who wins by tuning into the Freddy Awards on WFMZ-TV at 7pm Thursday May 22.

We'll also stream the show live on our website.
