Life Lessons: Family fitness challenge

What is your family doing this summer?

If you're looking for something fun and different, you might want to sign your family upĀ  for the IGNITE Your Life Family Fitness Challenge which runs June 23rd thru August 3rd.

Families will sample the hottest venues in fitness, nutrition, and outdoor adventures in the Lehigh Valley.

The idea came from Laura Putt, editor of Lehigh Valley Family and Kenrick Smith of K17 Sports Fitness in Schnecksville.

Putt says, "That little spark of an idea to do something locally just grew into this amazing family challenge that just grew beyond our wildest expectations."

"We really want to see families get out of their comfort zones and try something they can all do together to increase their family bond and things like that," explained Smith.

Families will try their hand at classes in yoga and martial arts and visit outdoor locations like Dutch Springs, the Rodale Institute and the Wildlands Conservancy.

The best part is the cost: $100 a family, which breaks down to about $2 an activity.

It's a steal, says Putt.

"If you totalled everything up for a family of five, this is well over a value of $1000."

The proceeds will go to charity and the hope is to give families new experiences and great memories.

"We're trying to reach a whole different group of families, not just those who are always doing activities. We want to hit those for sure but we want to hit the ones that just don't know what's out there," says Smith.

Families will earn points as they complete the different challenges assigned.

Over the course of the series, points will be tallied weekly for families to view. The family that accumulates the most points will win the grand prize.

All activities and workouts will be a different activity and will be held in different locations throughout the Lehigh Valley.

Activities will be broken down into three categories:

1) Workouts - Will be scheduled with set times and locations, occurring on a weekly basis. Sample workouts include: yoga, martial arts, trail run/walk, etc.

2) Flash mob workouts - These workouts will have set times each week, but the location and activity will be withheld til the day of the workout. The morning of the Flash mob workout, a blast message will be sent out informing families where the workout will take place and what the family will need in order to complete the challenge. Sample flash mob workouts include: biking, boot camp at the park, Zumba at a local dance studio.

3) Destinations - Families will have the opportunity to visit predetermined destinations on their own, or have the option to meet up with the greater group.

Destinations will be at both little known locations in the Valley as well as local hotspots.
