According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, at least 2.4 million eye injuries occur in the United States every year.
The most common type of injury is getting something stuck in the eye, accounting for 35 percent of the total. But they say using protective eyewear can prevent 90 percent of all eye injuries.
Do you sleep in your makeup or contacts? The CDC reports that sleeping in contacts or using expired contact solution raises the risk of eye infection by five times or more.
And do you have dry, red eyes?
“Well people get a lot of misinformation," said Dr. James McDonnell, MD, an adult eye alignment specialist.
Eye drops are not a cure. Find the root of the problem.
And the vision council reports that 60 percent of Americans experience “digital eye strain”. This causes dry, irritated eyes and out-of-focus vision, along with neck and back pain.
Limit how much time you stare at a screen to lower your risk.
Rubbing and touching your eyes can lead to broken blood vessels and inflammation, and applying eyeliner to your water line can cause infection.
Lastly, wear sunglasses year-round to prevent UV damage, and don’t skip those annual eye exams!
“Taking care of all of those sensory kind of issues, like how well you’re seeing all of those things lined up and taken care of, those are very important,” said Dr. McDonnell.
The World Health Organization states that about three-fourths of all visual impairment globally is preventable. Early detection, diagnosis, and treatment can help alleviate or slow loss of vision.
