WEST READING, PA. - A candy maker in West Reading is making sure you are stocked up on those chocolate bunnies before Easter.
As old man winter begins to fade away, spring time sunshine brings about a tradition found at grocery and retail stores, the chocolate Easter bunny. CEO Richard Palmer Jr., of R.M. Palmer Company, told 69 News that they produce over 300,000 pounds of chocolate per day.
"Their uniqueness just makes it fun to bring home and have around the house during the appropriate time," said Palmer.
A large portion of the company's financial stability relies on these cute milk chocolate bunnies. They begin their holiday manufacturing three to four months ahead of the actual holiday. This year, Easter falls on April 24th. Mark Schlott, Vice President of Operations, told 69 news that the candy bar company makes tens of millions of bunnies every year.
"We start shipping our Easter bunnies usually around the Christmas holiday and throughout January to make sure they are in the stores the day after Valentine's Day," said Schlott.
Palmer stated that his company takes pride in themselves on their attention to detail. From pouring the chocolate into molds, adding the icing details on the bunnies to creating hand made bows and packaging, Palmer told 69 News that their employees give these pieces of chocolate personality.
When Richard Palmer Jr.'s father first founded the company over 60 years ago, there were only three full time employees. Today, they have over 500. Employee Rachel Stout told 69 News that many of the employees have been with the company for over 25 years.
"I really like what I do because you take pride in making something look nice," said Stout.
This little but familiar treat is distributed around the world and it is Made Right Here in West Reading.
