WEST READING, Pa. - A new day has brought about a new name for The Reading Hospital.
At midnight Wednesday, the 144-year-old hospital officially became known as Reading Health System, a new identity that officials said "more clearly signifies the depth and breadth of an integrated health care system."
Continuing to use "Reading" in the name conveys the organization's commitment to the community while using "system," officials said, links its facilities, services and physicians that are spread out among 63 locations around the region.
"Today is the dawning of a new day for all of us, internally and externally, for our patients and our providers, for Berks County and beyond," said Clint Matthews, president and CEO, Reading Health System.
The Reading Health System consists of:
Reading Hospital (formerly The Reading Hospital and Medical Center), a 673-bed acute care hospital in West Reading;
Reading Health Rehabilitation Hospital (formerly The Reading Hospital for Post-Acute Rehabilitation), a facility in Spring Township with 62 patient rooms, including an 11-bed secured brain injury unit, and 50 private rooms for transitional or skilled care;
Reading Health Physician Network (formerly The Reading Hospital Medical Group and Reading Professional Services), a network of primary care and specialty physicians;
The Highlands at Wyomissing, a 113-acre continuing care retirement community that provides independent living, skilled nursing and rehabilitation.
Berkshire Health Partners, a preferred provider organization jointly owned with physicians on Reading Hospital's medical staff, connecting nearly 100,000 employees of area businesses with a network of 4,300 health care providers.
"Our new name, Reading Health System, conveys the full scope of our organization, including our wide range of services, advanced treatments, and physical locations," Matthews said. "We are committed to fulfilling our promise to advance the health and wellness of the communities we serve."
Along with the name change, Reading Health System also introduced a new tagline – Advancing Health. Transforming Lives. – to convey the essence of Reading Health System and its "desire to advance the health of our communities and transform lives by being a consistent source of knowledge and support."
Reading Hospital's telephone numbers have also been made more uniform to coincide with the branding effort. All phone numbers have adopted the 484-628-XXXX protocol to existing extensions.
