Life Lessons: Savor the end of summer
With fall weather soon upon us, it is a time to savor the last days of summer.
Many of us will be enjoying cookouts with family and friends.
Here is an idea for an easy, tasty menu: guacamole burger and no bake dessert.
Denise Whiting, owner of CafÈ Hon, shares her secrets for the easy menu,starting with dessert.
"This is something that I grew up making. It was something every time mom left the house we happened to make No Bake Fudgies," Whiting says.
In a large saucepan add sugar, milk, butter, and cocoa.
Heat the ingredients until the butter and sugar are melted.
Next, grab your peanut butter, vanilla, oats, and coconut.
Stir these ingredients in until they are well-mixed. Then use a spoon to place dollops of the mixture onto wax paper for them to cool.
"It's just a nice, wonderful, gooey goodness," Whiting said. "The hardest part is going to be waiting for them to cool."
Next up, guacamole burgers, which Whiting thinks will make an impression.
"Once you put these burgers on the grill, your family and friends are going to just go, 'oh wow!,'" Whiting explained.
What's the secret to these great burgers? Finely chopped bacon.
"It's just going to give it a little something extra that your guests are going to go, 'what is that in there?,'" Whiting said.
Mix in the bacon, finely chopped garlic, lime juice, and slightly toasted cumin to the beef before making patties. Get them grilling and get ready for the guacamole.
Chop up avocado, onion, and tomato, before adding some jalapeno and lime juice.
After the burgers are done, serve a spoonful on top for an easy meal.
"Let me just tell you," Whiting explained, "it's going to be the best burger you ever had. Very simple."
