HARRISBURG, Pa. -

The Pennsylvania Department of Health wants to improve efficiency through consolidation.

Governor Tom Corbett's administration wants to close nearly half of the state's 60 health centers.

The department would consolidate them into 34 facilities and eliminate 26 overlapping nursing jobs.

State health officials say state health centers aren't effective enough.

The union representing nurses says consolidation could slow down the detection or prevention of outbreaks.

Nurses say consolidation would also hurt rural regions.
