If you have an almond allergy, you'll want to check your freezer.
Giant Food stores and Martin's food markets are recalling a specific brand of gelato that contains almonds, an allergen, but isn't disclosed on the product's label.
The recall is for Talenti German Chocolate Cake Gelato, and the supermarkets have already removed it from sale.
The item in question is 16 oz., UPC 18685200063, with Best By Dates
of 11/04/2014 M1, 11/24/2014 M1, and 11/24/2014 M2.
The grocery store chain officials say they have not had any reports of illnesses to date, but people with an allergy or severe sensitivity to almonds may run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.
Officials say symptoms of food allergies typically appear from within a few minutes to two hours after a person has eaten the food to which he or she is allergic.
Allergic reactions can include: hives; flushed skin or rash; tingling or itchy sensation in the mouth; face, tongue, or lip swelling; vomiting and/or diarrhea; abdominal cramps; coughing or wheezing; dizziness and/or lightheadedness; swelling of the throat and vocal cords; difficulty breathing; loss of consciousness.
Customers with concerns should throw away any unused portions or bring their purchase receipt to Giant/Martin's for a full refund.
