The head of the Transportation Security Administration told The Associated Press that he's dropping a proposal to let airline passengers carry small knives, bats and other sports equipment onto planes.

Some security experts say security improvements since the attacks -- most notably reinforced cockpit doors, better intelligence and motivated passengers-- have made the strict prohibition of small pen-knives unnecessary.

But the proposal had drawn fierce opposition from lawmakers, airlines and others who said it would place passengers and crews at risk.
