1801: Politician and diplomat William H. Seward, who served as the governor of New York, a U.S. senator and the U.S. secretary of state under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson, is born in Florida, N.Y. As Johnson's secretary of state, he engineered the 1867 purchase of Alaska from Russia in move that was ridiculed at the time as "Seward's Folly."
