Berks Company to Make Navy's Submarine Batteries
The U.S. Navy has awarded a contract to Berks County-based EnerSys Energy Products to produce valve regulated lead acid batteries for its nuclear submarines. The company will actually produce the batteries at its facility in Warrensburg, Missouri. [ WEB LINK: ( EnerSys ) ] "This is the first of hopefully many contracts as the U.S. Navy converts its fleet of approximately 70 nuclear submarines to VRLA batteries," said Sanjay Deshpande, EnerSys vice president of aerospace and defense. The company says its technology will enable each submarine to achieve longer run times while cutting down on battery maintenance. Official also say their success with the U.S. Navy may bring them business of converting submarine batteries for other navies around the world.
