Billboards, Higher Reward Part Of Renewed Effort To Catch Killer
While the case has grown cold over the past 12 years, the family and friends of Gary Miller, along with police, have never given up on catching his killer.
Miller, 43, a gospel music promoter, was found shot to death on a parking lot off Route 222 in Cumru Township, Berks County, on August 6, 1999.
"While the pain diminishes somewhat over the years, it never goes away. It will never go away," said Robert E. Smith, Miller's stepfather. "It was a cold-blooded murder."
Now, with the 12th anniversary of Miller's death approaching, his family and friends have more than doubled the cash reward being offered by Crime Alert Berks County for information that leads to an arrest. That reward now amounts to up to $22,000.
"There is someone out there, someone somewhere, who knows what happened, why it happened, who did it, and all I'm asking is please, if you have any information at all, come forward," said Smith.
Five billboards featuring Miller's picture and Crime Alert Berks County's toll-free tip line number are also going up around Berks County in an effort to renew awareness of the unsolved case.
"We're hoping the possibility of someone seeing this billboard and reading it and remembering just a little thing," said Det. Robert Wanner, Cumru Township Police Department, who has served as lead investigator of the case for the last nine years. "This case will not be solved unless we get help from the public."
Smith, whose wife, Miller's mother, passed away two years ago, said he and his family are still holding on to hope they will someday find out who killed Miller.
"He was just a friendly, likable person," said Smith.
Police said they have received numerous tips in the case over the years, but most have resulted in dead-ends. Still, investigators want the information to keep coming in.
"The peer pressure today, and I guess in society, is if you help the police, you're a rat, and that's not the case," said Wanner. "People have to start doing the right thing."
Anyone with information about the Gary Miller homicide can call Crime Alert Berks County. The toll-free number is 877-373-9913.
A cash reward of up to $22,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest.
Gary Miller's family and Crime Alert are paying for the production of the billboards. The space is being donated by a local billboard company.
