Burn victim honored for spirit of courage

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

Several people were honored Tuesday for their courage and commitment to burn education at the annual "Spirit of Courage" awards celebration.

It was held at Lehigh Valley Hospital's Muhlenburg Campus in Bethlehem.

The event honors people who have risked their lives to save others from a burn or death by fire and it honors people who promote fire safety or burn prevention education.

Steven Leymeister, of Shillington, Berks County was presented with the Phoenix Award at the ceremony.

Leymeister managed to survive being attacked and burned on 85 percent of his body nearly seven years ago.

He now uses his experiences to provide strength and a message of hope to others.

"No matter what your circumstance or what walk of life you may come from, there is no obstacle insurmountable," he said.

Leymeister is pursuing a degree in counseling psychology at Albright College.
