A Reading family was about to face a winter without heat in their home until they got the best gift of all.

For Christine Kramer, her daughter Andrea and seven year-old son Michael, staying warm this winter has been their biggest struggle. Michael Kramer told 69 News on Friday that over the summer, his family's gas heater broke.

"Usually I got a thermal shirt on and next I put on my pajamas on and I also put on socks and slippers," said Kramer.

To help make ends meet, Christine Kramer said she works two jobs to support her family.

"It's not easy," said Christine daughter's Andrea Kramer.    

"We use the oven to heat downstairs," said Christine Kramer.

To fix their gas heater, it was going to cost the Kramer family at least $2,000. Christine said they did not have the money to fix the heater, putting them in a very difficult situation. Andrea Kramer said they didn't know where to turn to until she came upon the Comfort Pro website.

A company spokesperson told 69 News that they offered to install a free new heating system for a family in need of it most. This is the second year Comfort Pro has done this. County officials vote on the winner.

"I told her, 'mom, this might be our only chance, so we might has well give it a shot,'" said Andrea Kramer.

In November, Christine wrote Comfort Pro a letter saying, "I feel a little selfish asking, but I have nowhere else to turn. I've tried just about everything, but no one is willing to help."

What the Kramer family did not know, Andrea said, is that six other families wrote to Comfort Pro telling the company why the Kramer family deserved a new heating system. A month later, the Kramers got the call.

"She cried, I got weepy. It really is the best Christmas present that we could get," said Andrea Kramer.
