Company's grant helps group renovate aging facility
A little bit of kindness can go a long way.
For the Berks County Association for the Blind, a generous grant from The Home Depot will provide the agency with much needed renovations to its aging facility.
"It's like a dream come true," said Jo Bondonese, CEO of the association. "This $20,000 grant, which is going to really spruce up the agency with the much needed work to be done."
"We have this program called Team Depot, which we can offer grants to people in the neighborhood so we can help fix up their area and get them productive," said Julia Stokes, speciality assistant manager of The Home Depot in Wyomissing.
For the next two weeks, volunteers and staff are helping The Home Depot volunteers with painting, setting up new lighting fixtures, placing new carpeting, inserting new ceiling tiles, among other things, as their building gets an extreme makeover.
"Our building was built in 1957 and hasn't had any updates or anything up until now," said Kathy Brautigan, marketing and production representative for the Berks County Association for the Blind.
Brautigan said the agency has not had substantial funds to foot the bill for renovation projects.
The agency also received a $5,000 grant from the Berks County Lions Club to fix the roof, however, more money was needed to upgrade the building in its entirety, Brautigan said.
When the agency reached out to The Home Depot for help, Brautigan said it never expected the amount of money it was about to receive.
"We just want to be able to help anybody who has any vision problems or anything of that sort," said Brautigan.
Currently, the Berks County Association for the Blind services about 700 blind, visually impaired as well as people with disabilities in the county.
With the renovations, the agency hopes to be able to serve more people. Brautigan said the agency also provides working opportunities for those it services.
Officials said it is a big undertaking for such a small staffed agency, but it is one that goes a long way for Berks residents.
