Prosecutors announced plans Wednesday they will seek the death penalty against a doctor charged with killing a patient and seven babies at his abortion clinic.
Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 70, is accused of running a filthy medical practice that allegedly served as a pill mill by day and an abortion mill by night.
City prosecutors cited as aggravating circumstances the multiple deaths and the tender age of the babies allegedly killed with scissors after being born alive.
Defense lawyers suggested Gosnell, his wife, and eight other defendants treated poor women when no one else would.
Gosnell's lawyer, Jack McMahon, who has also represented several murder suspects in Reading, said Gosnell would die of old age before a death sentence would ever be carried out.
Gosnell is being held without bail. He did not appear in court Wednesday.
