Police say the man who attacked and robbed an 85-year-old woman is now in police custody.

Moments after a surveillance photo aired on 69 News police say tips came rolling in.

The crime happened around 12:15 p.m. Monday in the 1900 block of Perkiomen Avenue in Mount Penn, Berks Co., near the border with Reading.

The woman just got off a BARTA bus from center city and was walking home when her attacker, who got off the same bus, attacked her from behind for no reason other than to take her purse, said police.

Police say the elderly woman's attacker is 23-year-old William Smith from the 100 block of South Mill Street in Birdsboro.

Investigators are calling it a crime of opportunity and say Smith followed the woman off a Barta bus then knocked her to the ground and stole her purse.

She is in stable condition after receiving staples in her head and suffering a dislocated shoulder.
