Europe's financial woes could spell trouble for US

READING, Pa. -

Local economic experts fear European financial troubles may have already made their to the United States.

Farhad Saboori, professor of economics at Albright College in Reading, said that if Europe's money problems are not solved, they could hurt American Jobs.

"They [the Europeans] won't be able to buy the products that we produce, and the U.S. is a major supporter of passenger planes, electronic equipment, heavy equipment, and the demand for those products has already started to go down," said Saboori.

Saboori also cited American Airline's recent filing for Chapter 11 an example of how the European crisis may have already started to impact U.S. workers.

Experts said at the center of this problem are the troubled economies of countries like Greece, Italy and Spain.

Saboori explained that these nations have spent more than they could afford, and now countries like Germany and France, who have been fiscally responsible, are currently unwilling to lend.

Saboori said the Europeans could opt for creating a fiscal union, which would be one entity controlling the finances of Europe, and run just like the Treasury Department in the United States.

"That would prevent each country from creating its own budget deficits," said Saboori.

Another option could be to form one currency for all of Europe, but that, too, could be an uphill battle.

"Not likely in the short run," concluded Saboori.

Economic forecasters said if the Europeans can't get their finances together soon, it could prolong the United States' already struggling financial recovery.
