First candidate enters race for county's new House seat

The first candidate has thrown his hat into the ring to represent Berks County's newest district.

Fred Sheeler announced his candidacy for the state House seat in the 5th District on Wednesday.

"The 5th District is made up of a few densely populated areas but is primarily comprised of farmland, rural residential areas, and about 20 of the most extraordinary small towns in Berks," said Sheeler. "I bring with me a deep commitment to our farmers and our small towns."

Sheeler has served as recorder of deeds for Berks County since 2007. He was also a small business owner in Hamburg for 15 years.

The state's legislative districts were redrawn based on the 2010 census.
