Helping To Rebuild Haiti
A year ago, we were telling you about a terrible tragedy unfolding to our south in Haiti. A massive earthquake -- it devastated the island country, and resulted in much death.
Americans donated millions of dollars to support relief efforts in Haiti.
And several local churches that had established ministries in Haiti before the quake became our eyes and ears after the quake.
Pastor Aaron Durso of Love Christian Fellowship in Birdsboro and his colleague shot a video driving to one of their churches in Haiti.
"Haiti is an island there's no where to put all the rubble. So they need to get the rubble off the island,"" said Pastor Aaron Durso.
Durso said Haiti should be built from the ground up. He said the infrastucture is weak, but the people are strong. "Just talking to the people, even through the whole cholera epidemic they stayed positive, they stay upbeat and they just really work together," said Pastor Durso, "There's a really good spirit of community."
Pastor Durso has visited Haiti three times since the earthquake and is leaving again in two weeks.
Mark Gillette the President of TeamOne 27 plans on leaving Thursday morning for Haiti. "We now have three orphanage locations and we're building a forth," said Gillette.
Gillette's non-profit sent buses full of supplies to Haiti. He said thanks to the people of Berks County who donated. "They're making a difference the buses, the five buses full of supplies that we've sent have been used not just in our orphanages but also thousands of people surrounding our orphanages," said Gillette.
He said his group also has a plan to start a for-profit company to rebuild Haiti. "To create some infrastructure there, to create an economy, to create jobs to give back the people their dignity. They can go to work and feed their families." Gillete said Team One27 was in Haiti before the quake and will be there for a long time in the future. "The earthquake just was a wake up call to the world of how desperate Haiti's situation really is."
