Hospital volunteer celebrates 100th birthday

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. -

A local man hit the century mark and he celebrated by doing what he always does, making the rounds at Doylestown Hospital.

After all, he says it's just another day on the job!

For nearly 20 years Jack Lindsley has volunteered at Doylestown Hospital.

"I like people and I have a lot of friends I think. I know I have," said Lindsley.

He's made those friends while working in several areas, including the mail room.

You wouldn't know it by looking at him but Monday was Jack's 100th birthday.

"Nothing special. Just another day for me," he said.

A day filled with hand shakes and smiles from staff members and fellow volunteers.

"Not too many obtain that but I was very fortunate to be 100," said Lindsley.

After all of the cake and congratulations, it's back to work.

"I generally work until noon anyway," he said.

There's always something to sort in the mail room but the retired postal worker and fireman says his favorite part of the job is delivering patient mail because it's not just a card he's dropping off.

"It makes you think that somebody is thinking of you," he said.

"He's just a great guy. Almost the perfect volunteer," said Ernie Keyser. "He's just fun to be around in a lot of ways he'll tell a good joke too."

Jack says a sense of humor is a good thing but says staying busy is also important.

He has this advice for the 80 something set: thinking about volunteering.

"I tell them to do it. Don't sit and look at the four walls that will kill you. No I always have something to do. Go to Atlantic city" he joked.
