Lansdale Mayor Stepping Down After 26 Years at City's Helm
His name is Mayor Mike...and he's been top dog in Landsale, Montgomery County for 26 years. Until Wednesday, that is. Mayor Mike is saying so long. But before he walked into the sunset, he shared some life lessons with WFMZ's Eve Tannery. >> TANNERY: Mike DiNunzio took over his uncle's shoemaking business in Lansdale as a teenager... That's where, in 1982, a Republican committee member convinced him to take on a different business - running the borough. >> MIKE: She kept on bugging me and finally I said okay, I'll do it. >> TANNERY: 26 years later, it's a decision Mike says he's glad he made. >> MIKE: Nobody calls me mayor; they call me Mayor Mike as if it's one word. >> TANNERY: But, after more than a quarter century, Mayor Mike has decided to call it quits. >> MIKE: I'm 90 years old and when you're 90, that's kind of too old to be a mayor. >> TANNERY: And though the mayor's office is now empty.. he leaves his post full of memories and accomplishments. >> MAYOR: I did 356 weddings in my time. >> LEE: In the last 4 years we've seen over 100 million in new investment in our community. >> TANNERY: Borough manager Lee Mangan worked with Mayor Mike from the start. >> LEE: We struck an immediate partnership; Mike has always been extremely focused on bringing the town back. >> TANNERY: Now, that he's retired, Mayor Mike says he'll focus on his hobby - antique cars... And no matter what he chooses to do, many say he'll always be the Mayor Mike everyone knows and loves. >> LEE: He'll be in the community; he'll be active, and our friendship will go on, I'm sure. >> TANNERY: In Lansdale, Montgomery County, Eve Tannery, 69 News. >> Landsale Council will elect a replacement for Mayor DiNunzio to finish his term. The Council President will fill-in until then.
