Local businesses look for boost in website traffic on Cyber Monday
Last week, shoppers were salivating over "Black Friday." Now it's "Cyber Monday," the day for online deals. But some local businesses are having trouble cashing-in.
A stay at the Lafayette Inn on historic College Hill is a trip to Easton's past.
"The house has a lot of character," said owner Paul Di Liello. "The house was built as a private residence back in 1895."
"It's been a home; it's been an apartment building," added his wife, Laura. "It's been a fraternity house."
Now, that stay is a little more affordable -- thanks to Cyber Monday.
"This is our first year that we're trying this," said Paul. "If booked online with a special code, you get 10 to 20 percent off."
This historic home has used some decidedly modern methods to get the word out.
"It's been a Facebook and Twitter campaign," said Laura.
Across town at Ground Zero Performance, they're even offering a Cyber Monday deal on a restored car.
"It's good for business," said owner Hans Ertl. "It's good for everybody to get a deal."
But Ertl admitted, the discounts actually cost him money. He does it more for the website traffic.
"I'd say it's probably about 25 to 30 percent of our business, is just internet sales," he said.
Back at the Lafayette Inn…
"It's been pretty quiet," said Paul Di Liello.
Cyber Monday hasn't exactly lived up to expectations -- yet.
"It's been a little slow," said Laura. "We're not sure if we're just not getting the word out completely, but it's the first year, so I'm sure we'll try it again next year."
Nationwide, the research firm comScore estimates Americans will spend $1.5 billion this Cyber Monday. That's 20 percent more than last year.
