Local man hits milestone: donates 100 gallons of blood
A local man has hit a major milestone for helping others. It's taken about twenty years, but he has donated more than 100 gallons of blood.
LeRoy Sutton is a familiar face at the Miller-Keystone Blood Center in Bethlehem.
"They say it's almost like a job you know," said Sutton.
He comes every two weeks. Always on a Friday. Twenty-four times a year he donates his platelets. He's been doing this self-less routine for more than two decades.
"Every time I donate I write it in a book, my date of donation and the amount and how much I give," explains Sutton.
Last month he reached a milestone; 100 gallons of blood donated!
"So today is 100 and a half gallons," joked Sutton.
Sutton is the first person to donate this much blood at the Miller-Keystone Blood Center. He says it was a personal goal.
"Whatever I can do for the cause, and I think I told somebody it's in my blood," he said.
If you can't donate as frequently as Sutton, just once can help save lives. The blood center is always in need. Just one blood donation can help three patients, and in Sutton's case that number adds up.
"Thousands, he has literally helped thousands of people," said Joe Yelo with Miller-Keystone Blood Center.
