Lopatcong residents upset with asphalt plant plans
Some Lopatcong Township, New Jersey, residents say they need to know more before a proposed asphalt plant is approved in the township.
"I don't know a lot about this facility. They are talking state of the art. I need to be informed," said resident Juniper Leifer.
Leifer says she and her neighbors have a lot of questions about a proposal to put an asphalt plant on Stryker's Road.
189 Associated LLC has been working its way through the public approval process with the planning board for nearly six months.
But it wasn't until this week that residents in this Warren County, New Jersey town started paying attention.
Leifer says she and the other residents are hoping to slow down the approval process and get township officials to provide them with more information to address their concerns.
"I want an expert on the environmental impact and I want an expert on the economic impact," said Leifer.
Lopatcong's Mayor and township leaders can't talk about the project due to a series of lawsuits now in play after officials amended an ordinance to add the word "asphalt" in zoning documents.
Township attorney Michael Lavery says 189 asked for the specific wording because of problems the company had in another township.
Lavery says he knows residents have a lot of questions.
"It's a shame that some of them only found out about this now but as luck would have it the applicant will be going back in front of the planning board and they will be able to ask questions of their experts and satisfy themselves one way or another," sais Lavery.
That meeting is set for February 22nd.
Residents are encouraged to bring their questions.
