A rape suspect on the run from authorities since 1970 has been apprehended in Schuylkill County, according to police.

Russell Pearce was taken into custody at a home in the 500 block of East Lloyd Street in Shenandoah, where they said he had been living under the alias of Russell Stengle.

Police said Pearce, now 73, has been wanted for the alleged rape of a woman in Fallsburg, New York in 1970.

Police said they recently learned he was living in Shenandoah.

He is now in the Schuylkill County Jail on $100,000 bail, pending his extradition to New York.
