Mayor ready to tackle city's crime, money issues
State of the City: Mayor tackles crime, money problems
Reading's new mayor has outlined his battle plan to save the city.
Mayor Vaughn Spencer spelled it out this evening in a 20-minute State of the City speech at City Hall.
Spencer told the audience that the city will be more aggressive in collecting taxes to reduce the city's debt.
He also said his administration will improve fiscal management and not tolerate what he calls "accounting tricks."
The mayor also encouraged those who want to open businesses in Reading: he says he'll be working to streamline that process.
During Monday evening's speech, the mayor indicated he is ready to tackle the city's crime problem.
Over the past couple of weeks, many may remember the rash of robberies that affected more than 20 bodegas throughout the city since Thanksgiving.
But Spencer indicated help is on the way. In his speech, the mayor said, "A few short weeks ago, our administration added 25 new officers to our already world-class police force."
City officials said the serious crime rate has actually dropped by 18 percent over the last several years.
But police say they recognize the streets of Reading can still be dangerous.
"Our biggest problem right now is young people without good parental supervision that are out late at night bothering neighbors, doing damage to property, engaging in fighting and assaults," said Chief Bill Heim, Reading Police Department.
Police said to target this problem they will be making home visits.
"We like to go into the neighborhoods, talk with the citizens, find out what the issues are for them," said Heim.
"We must do better, and we will do better. There is light at the end of this tunnel. Reading's best days are yet to come," said Mayor Spencer.
If you are concerned about speaking with police for fear of retaliation, officials said police are willing to meet you in a private location, or you can call 911 anonymously.
