Megan's Law Website Gets C-
Published On: Aug 25 2011 03:16:35 PM EDT Updated On: Jun 23 2010 09:28:45 AM EDTA well-known website used to track sex offenders in Pennsylvania neighborhoods is getting a low grade from the state auditor general.
He's giving Pennsylvania's Megan's Law website a C- compared to similar sites in other states.
Auditor General Jack Wagner says state police could be doing a better job of telling people what they need to know about sex offenders living in their neighborhoods.
Inadequate search functions, blurry photos, incomplete information on sex offenders are all problems Pennsylvania's auditor general says are plaguing the state's Megan's Law website.
I think people should care about it. More people are using the Internet now and having a website with the sex offenders listed could be a useful tool for people, said one man we talked with.
Auditor General Jack Wagner gave the site a C-minus compared to other states.
He says Pennsylvania State Police need to do a better job of updating the website, which currently lists more than 10-thousand offenders.
He says it's something people check every day.
Out of curiosity I checked it out but at the same time I really wanted to know, said a
Have you ever used it? We asked one dad. He said, no. My sister uses it though. She uses it a lot. She's got a list of everybody in the neighborhood, her neighborhood, my neighborhood.
Wagner criticized police for the lack of e-mail notifications to neighbors whenever a new offender moves in the area.
He also slammed the search engine saying it's not as user-friendly as it should be. One example someone searching Wilkes-Barre with no hyphen would find no offenders living there.
People we talked with say the website is important enough to improve.
It's really scary but it's a good thing to know that you're able to know who's in your area, said the mother.
State Police responded to the auditor general saying they're working to make some improvements to the website, within their budgetary restraints.
