Money-Saving Textbook Tips
Some Schools Offer New Way To Save
Published On: Aug 24 2011 01:49:01 PM EDT Updated On: Aug 18 2010 11:11:14 AM EDTSome students on tight budgets say they're tired of paying high prices for textbooks.
It just so happens that Alvernia University's bookstore is offering a book option that promises savings.
To save money many college students are following the rental signs all the way to their next textbook.
I'm a college student, you know, got to save money, said Allison Pierce.
Pierce paid more than $500 for textbooks last year but not again. This year's she's renting.
These books are only about $60, she said. So I figure it's the best deal. Even though I don't get any money back, I'm still not losing over a hundred dollars if nobody buys it.
Students like Pierce are keeping store manager, Bridget Scogna busy.
More than 255 Alvernia students have already signed a rental agreement and are waiting for their textbooks.
Well just using this as the example, said Scogna. That's $85.89 to rent the title. To purchase a new book it's $189.75. So it's still a nice cost savings.
But not everyone is renting this semester, like Tammy Nies' daughter.
Because there are some courses that she's taking that will require two terms for the classes, said Nies. So we're buying them right now and hopefully in the future we can rent.
Some books are not eligible for rental program. A certain chemistry book, which costs almost $200 isn't, and that's because it comes as a package, with a workbook and a CD.
But Scogna says those that do rent, could save hundreds.
If it's a $700 bill for their science books, let's say, it could be bought down to say like $500, she said.
The rent-a-textbook program is available at 1,300 universities across the country, as well as Barnes and Noble.
