Mummy delivered to Reading museum

READING, Pa. -

The daughter of a wealthy family in ancient Egypt has been preserved in the Reading Public Museum for decades, but a key part of the exhibit has been in storage until now.

More than 2,000 years ago Nefrina had a mask made to protect her face. And Wednesday the mask was delivered to the museum.

Many women don't feel complete without putting on their face for the day. Nefrina has not looked the way she was intended to look when she died and was mummified 2,300 years ago.

"They made her look as perfect and as beautiful as they could as beautiful as she was in real life," said Jennifer Snyder, a tour guide.

Around 300 BC Nefrina was being prepared for her trip to the after life. This included her mask.

"It was to protect her head, it was placed on there to protect her," said Snyder.

Nefrina came to the Reading Public Museum in 1930 but her mask didn't. She's been waiting 82 years.

"It was a very emotional experience actually," said Snyder, "I was tearing up a little bit because it is so huge and it's so important to the museum itself. And it's a wonderful opportunity for us to bring people in to see what it's meant to be and how it's meant to be put together."

But it wasn't an easy trip.

"Before it could travel it needed to be stabilized," said Tessa De Alarcon, a graduate student who worked on the mask.

For four months people at the University of Pennsylvania, who own Nefrina's mask, restored it.

"There was a dent on her forehead, there was another dent in the back of her head, the nose was dented in the cheek was dented in," said De Alarcon.

The Reading Public Museum has unwrapped many of the secrets of Nefrina's life, from how she died to what she looked like.

Now what was meant to protect her face in the afterlife has been returned.

"It's breathtaking," said Snyder.

And for 2012 Nefrina can feel complete.
