New state-of-the-art science center opens

READING, Pa. -

Albright College's 90 year-old science center has moved into the 21st century thanks to a $31 million renovation and construction.

Albright College's president said they have many alumni who are successful in the sciences and with this brand new building they will be able to continue that reputation.

The new Science Center is a project that has been years in the making at Albright College.

"The only way I can really believe it's done is by turning around and looking at it yeah, it's really there. It's really done," said Lex McMillan, Albright College President.

McMillan said before it was built there were lots of discussions about where to place the new state of the art building.

"Somebody said, 'this is the site, the science field put the new building down here,'" said McMillan pointing to the field, "I go,' you can't put the building here. We play frisbee out here.'"

Preserving green space was a concern and they decided to expand the original science hall that was built in the 1920s.

"It was a really outdated building for the way science is done today and certainly the way science is taught today," said McMillan.

The result is a building that from the front looks very much the same.

"It's still the gateway to the sciences, but then tucked around behind it is a 41,000 square foot new building, even larger than the original building," said McMillan.

McMillan said it will allow Albright College to continue to attract students interested in the sciences and give them the space to do their own research.

"We prepare students well for medical school, for other health sciences, for research and we have many distinguished alums who have achieved highly in all those fields," said McMillan.

For the grand opening the college plans to thank the many people who helped get it built.

They did borrowed some money, but raised over $20 million of the $31 million.
