Officer Shoots Robbery Suspect
Published On: Aug 25 2011 03:17:15 PM EDT Updated On: Jun 25 2010 03:20:35 AM EDTPolice are releasing more details about what led to an officer's shooting of a robbery suspect.
Police said they've made two arrests in connection with the shooting on Jerome Street in Allentown Sunday afternoon.
The arrests followed a home invasion in Bethlehem earlier in the day.
Police said Jeremiah Nieves, 24, was shot by police. He is in stable condition at a local hospital.
Police arrested his partner, Luis Martinez, 26.
Police said the two men created a terrifying Father's Day for a Bethlehem couple and an entire Allentown neighborhood.
"We come here for the peace and quiet but now we hear some crime in the neighborhood," said neighbor Brad McGowan.
Police said Nieves and Martinez broke into a home in the 200 block of Market Street in Bethlehem.
They said the men assaulted the homeowner and his wife with a handgun, tied them up, and left them in their basement.
Investigators said the two men took money, jewelry and the couple's black Lexus.
Police said the Lexus was later located near Jerome and East Linden streets in Allentown.
As they approached the car, police said both men got out and ran through the neighborhood, which led to Nieves being shot.
"I was lying in the backyard and heard pop, pop," said neighbor Diane Baylis.
Baylis said that was around 2:00 Sunday afternoon.
Police said as Nieves was running, he had a handgun and threatened police, which is why officers said they shot him.
Both Allentown and Bethlehem police canvassed yards, allies and streets looking for the loot that police said the robbers threw away as they were running.
We're told the Bethlehem residents who were tied up are doing okay.
Both Neives and Martinez are facing a list of charges.
Lehigh County D.A. Jim Martin said that, based on the evidence, the shooting was justified.
