One Tank Trip: Golden Age Air Museum
In aviation, the time between World War I and World War II is considered the golden age of flying. And within the Berks border, you'll find a museum and airfield based on the theme. WFMZ's Karin Mallett takes us on the tour in tonight's One Tank Trip: In Your Backyard. You need some space for this kind of collection.. "The museum started in 1996- as I say as kind of a family joke." Paul Dougherty and his father started collecting and restoring airplanes in the mid 1980's- "We had brought home I think our 4th or 5th airplane in pieces and our families started looking at us kinda crazy and said what are you going to do with all those airplanes? and we said- well we're going to start a museum." The Golden Age Air Museum and airfield sits on 55 acres in Bethel Township.. home to more than 2 dozen planes. "...they have oil on them, they have bugs smashed on the front of them- we clean them a few times a year but they are working airplanes and they earn their keep." Like this 1926 Winstead Special- the flying jewel of the collection. A one of a kind airplane owned by famous air walker Jessie Woods. And there's a plane that looks rather familiar- one that hung over diners for 44 years at the old Antique Airplane Restaurant in Exeter Township. When the restaurant closed- it was moved to the museum's workshop- Paul hopes to have it flying. An eccentric ensemble- there's even a rocket bike built for two- it won't get you in the air... but it's certainly a conversation piece. You not only get a look at the planes from here on the ground but the more adventurous tourist can see the museum and airport from above. So you know what that means.. I'm already in the front seat. For a fee.. you can take a ride in this 1929 Waco GXE biplane. "It's an open cockpit and you get to feel the wind on your face and get to see the Berks County countryside."
