One Tank Trip: Laurel Hill Cemetery

Not too far away - there's a spot along the river that prides itself in celebrating life - even in death. WFMZ's Karin Mallett has more on tonight's One Tank Trip. A flash of light shows the way.. But their stories - are secrets in the dark- Only revealed - in the light of day. >> It's 78 acres of green space in the middle of the city and a collection of the stories of the lives of our permanent residents. Founded in 1836- and modeled after the famed Pere Lachaise in Paris - Laurel Hill in Philadelphia is the first garden cemetery in the country. More than 100-thousand are interred here. In the spirit of the season - flashlight tours share their stories at night... These people wanted to be seen, they wanted to be remembered so I think that by helping people come to the cemetery and realizing that it's not just a mournful place but that really it's a place of celebration. Quaker Mercy Carlyle was the first... Simple and modest.. in stark contrast to Millionaire's Row- And here lies part of Mary Peterson - married twice - her heart was buried here by her first husband- while her body lies next to the second. Sharing the space are 31 Civil War generals- one who seems to be a long way from home. >> It's just an unbelievable treasure trove for researchers, for historians, for people who are just curious about what the past was like - and the present. Even Hollywood has found a place here at Laurel Hill - among the generals, mothers and Quakers- here lies Adrian Balboa. Yes- you can pay your respects to the fictional wife of Rocky. Sylvester Stallone picked the site. all of the cemetery scenes of the movie are filmed here- He had a stone made for Adrian as a prop and he donated it to us. : An underground museum full of life for the dead.
