Thousands of spectators gathered to watch today's Labor Day parade in Reading.

But some said this year's festivities carried a serious message of economic concern.

Scores of people enjoyed the bands and the vibrant colors marching along Penn Street in downtown Reading.

But behind the festivities, many expressed concerns over a struggling economy.

"We have to work for Main Street, not Wall Street," said Lois Herr, Democratic candidate in the 16th Congressional District. "We have to make sure that people have jobs."

And a lack of jobs has motivated several unions to make their presence known in the parade.

The Communications Workers of America, Local 1300, reported it's currently trying to organize workers from T-Mobile.

"Our union's been active with all the Labor Day parades around the state, and we're staring to get more active in Berks County," said Mike Davis, eastern vice president, Communications of America Local 1300. "I mean there are a lot of issues up here with people out of work. We need to show more of a labor presence up here and let our people know we're up here for them."

But some said the problem of job growth and stability has to do more with jobs being shipped overseas.

"We need to start making things again in America and rebuild the manufacturing industry, emphasize small businesses, talk about clean energy manufacturing, clean-tech manufacturing," said Manan Trivedi, Democratic candidate in the 6th Congressional District.

So, while the politicians and the unions marched for an improved economy, there were still families who tried to not let the financial concerns cast a shadow on their holiday.

"My mom comes down for the weekend," said Diane Buerke of Reading. "She lives in New York, so good family time."
