Over-the-counter HIV tests closer to reality

Published On: Jan 03 2012 11:34:49 AM EST

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -

A Bethlehem-based pharmaceutical company is one step closer to selling over-the-counter HIV tests.
OraSure needs federal approval to sell its OraQuick Rapid HIV test.
The company says the test is designed to deliver results in 20 minutes.
OraSure says it's submitted its final test results to the Food and Drug Administration for approval.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are approximately 1.2 million people in the U.S. with HIV, and around 240,000 of those are unaware they have HIV, despite current HIV testing options.

Around 50,000 new HIV infections occur each year. The CDC recommends routine HIV screening for all people aged 13-64, with more frequent testing for people at higher risk.
