Two killed in Route 209 crash in Carbon County

Single-car accident happened early Friday

MAHONING TWP., Pa. -

Two women were killed in an accident early Friday morning  in Carbon County.

Their car was traveling on Route 209 in Mahoning Township toward Lehighton when it went off the right shoulder "and hit the mountain head-on" around 12:25 a.m. Friday, police said.

Officers arriving on the scene found the Kia Forte setting sideways in the northbound lane.

The driver died at the scene; the passenger was taken to Gnaden Huetten Hospital  in Lehighton, where she died later,according to  police.

Carbon County Coroner Bruce Nalesnik identified the victims as Linda Benner, 66,  who was the driver, and Bonita Aniskevich, 51. Both were residents of Mahoning Township.

The coroner reported both died from blunt force injuries.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.
